It is essential to ensure that healthcare practitioners from different professional groups and different geographical areas have access to the same standards of Simulation-Based Learning (SBL) whether delivered, in fixed facilities, in situ in the workplace or on the Mobile Skills Unit.
The development of a Scottish QA system included a national approach to the design, piloting, delivery, evaluation and monitoring processes of online multi-professional Clinical Skills resources to enhance SBL.
The QA system for SBL is reviewed annually or when there are major changes in policy.
This SBL QA system was developed to reflect the simulation educational process of brief, immersion and debrief.
For each part of the process there are relevant tools and resources which need to be used to ensure the quality of the simulation-based learning being delivered. This is aligned to the NES Educational Governance Framework.
A National Outcomes Framework: matched with NMC, AoME, ASPiH and GMC frameworks has a three-tiered approach and was developed to identify key high level improvement outcomes:
o Tier 1 - practitioner educators of SBL
o Tier 2 - leaders of SBL
o Tier 3 - researchers of SBL
There is a one-page questionnaire for use with individual skills sessions where simulation is used and a scenario template for designing a SBL session ensuring standards of design are considered in the development of new scenarios.
