Urinary Catheterisation Learning Programme up on TURAS

This learning programme, available on TURAS, is the first of a Once for Scotland approach to clinical skills.  It has been developed by NHS Grampian and endorsed by CSMEN.  This multi-professional learning programme aims to establish standardised training in urinary catheterisation for nursing, medical and relevant allied healthcare professions.  The programme will support practitioners in the theory and practice of urinary catheterisation in preparation for transferring these skills to the workplace.

The programme has been structured into seven learning modules:

  1. Legislation, policy and good practice
  2. Anatomy and physiology of the urinary tract system
  3. Indications for urinary catheterisation
  4. Urinary catheterisation
  5. Catheter care and maintenance
  6. Collecting a urine sample and antibiotic prescribing
  7. Discharge and transfer

Mobile Skills Unit Update

In July the Mobile Skills Unit (MSU) was involved in a major week long exercise with 612 Sqn RAF Reservists at Leuchars Station.  The exercise provided a good opportunity to develop 612 Sqn personnel’s knowledge and experience of Tactical and Strategic Aeromedical Evacuation delivery. It also enabled personnel to develop understanding of the US Air Force full Operational Patient Care Pathway, whilst developing their clinical skills.

The MSU was used to simulate the inside of a helicopter evacuating injured personnel from a combat zone.  The exercise included treating and stabilising patients with multiple injuries ready for transfer via tactical airlift to a specialist hospital outside the combat area.  Reservists taking part in the exercise included medics, nurses, paramedics and pharmacy technicians from across NHS Scotland, as well as personnel from the US Air Force.

Psychiatry Faculty Development Course

people learning

In 2021, a psychiatry simulation faculty development training day was developed in NHS Lanarkshire in response to the increased number of psychiatry simulation courses that were being undertaken and the consequent need for more psychiatrists to act as faculty on courses.  It was felt that a psychiatry specific course would be beneficial given the distinct challenges that can arise when facilitating scenarios on sensitive mental health topics and to provide more in-depth teaching on the PEARLS debriefing framework used in psychiatry simulation.

The training days, run at the Ken Corsar Medical Education Training Centre in NHS Lanarkshire, are led by psychiatrists who are experienced simulation facilitators.

The day includes: a presentation on the background to simulation based education; information about the PEARLS debriefing tool; an introduction to the teaching areas (simulation space and observation room); how to use SMOTS (the audiovisual recording system); four simulated scenarios for undergraduate trainees (a trained actor is used as the patient, a faculty member as the medical student, two participants co-facilitate each scenario and the remaining participants portray the roles of the medical students attending the course; and, a meta-debrief with the group on navigating challenges that can be encountered.

Eight training days have been run since November 2023. Participants have included Consultant Psychiatrists, Higher Specialist Trainees in Psychiatry, Psychiatry Clinical Teaching Fellows and Psychiatry Nurses who have received paid time to co-facilitate simulation courses.

Medical Simulation Update

As the current training year ends we would like to thank all those who have worked with us to develop and maintain the medical simulation training programmes. This year has brought a further increase in the number of courses we are supporting and the number of trainees able to access state-of-the-art simulation training across Scotland.
