Multi-Professional Major Incident Simulation - Award Nomination!

Our work with the University of Glasgow has been shortlisted in the Partnership of the Year category at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2025.  The awards recognise the most innovative, impactful and inspiring individuals and organisations in the nursing and midwifery sector.

CSMEN were invited by Scottish Fire and Rescue to participate in an immersive, multi-agency major incident simulation. The live exercise provided students with the novel opportunity of being immersed in interprofessional working, across disciplines and agencies. The experience of educators and students has been disseminated nationally and internationally. Nursing, paramedic and medical students were supported in a successful abstract submission and poster presentation at a national simulation conference. In terms of sustainability, teaching resources and materials were repurposed to facilitate classroom-based simulation, with intended learning objectives being adapted to suit the stage of learner.

 Mobile Skills Unit Update

At the start of April, the Mobile Skills Unit travelled to Forth Valley where CPD Connect delivered a programme of training for medical staff.  The sessions included emergencies in primary care, primary care for International Medical Graduates, acute paediatrics and women’s health sessions. The MSU remained at Forth Valley for a fully booked multi-professional MSU Faculty Development course.

Continuing its busy schedule, the MSU travelled onto Glasgow Caledonian University where it was used in partnership with the NHS 24 Advanced Practice team and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Staff learned and refreshed their skills on how to teach simulation-based education. You can hear more about this on the CSMEN Facebook page.

Later in April the MSU had its first visit to Auchtercrag Care Home in Aberdeenshire. Over the course of a week care home staff took part in a comprehensive programme. Training sessions including signs of deterioration, future care planning, catheterisation competencies, leg ulcer assessment and dementia simulation sessions.  There were also community outreach exercises with training in CPR, basic airway manoeuvres and choking.

May is set to be another busy month for the MSU with visits to Mull and Iona Community Hospital, Stratheden Hospital in Fife and vehicle inspections.

The Mobile Skills Unit is a versatile, multi-professional and multi-agency resource. To book the MSU for your region, check out the MSU availability on this calendar.

Simulation Research in Scotland Survey

Earlier this year CSMEN circulated the Simulation Research in Scotland Survey.

If you haven't already done so, please can you take some time to complete this? Creating a body of research in respect of simulation is an ongoing challenge and CSMEN will use the responses to scope how we can support with this work.
