Mastery Learning - PICC Lines


Aim: This is the pre-course material and forms part of a mastery learning programme and should be used in conjunction with practical training sessions with targeted and specific feedback, performed on a one-to-one or one-to-two basis. Once deemed competent at performing the skill on a manikin, the trainee is expected to undergo supervised clinical practice, and complete formative and summative DOPS in the procedure before being signed off as competent for independent practice.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the indications and contraindications for PICC line insertion
  • Explain the choice of PICC line type
  • Describe the upper limb venous anatomy
  • Demonstrate upper limb vascular sonoanatomy
  • Apply ultrasound to identify anatomical variation in vascular anatomy
  • Explain the risks and benefits of the procedure without jargon as part of informed (verbal) consent
  • Demonstrate the Seldinger technique
  • Apply PICC line insertion skills appropriately in the clinical setting
  • Understand ongoing PICC line care, and be able to explain it to your patient
